Mill Road

Nos 2 and 3 Salutation Cottages

One building, formerly the Salutation Inn. Probably 15th century timber-framed building, restored and refaced after bomb damage in the war. Two storeys. three windows. Some timbering and close-studding with plaster infilling is exposed in the east wall, but it is mostly now faced on the ground floor with red brick on a stone base, above tile-hung. Steeply-pitched hipped tiled roof. Pointed stone doorway in east front leading to a vaulted cellar of about 1300.

17th Century or earlier. Timber-framed house restored by W H Godfrey since the war after bomb damage and now fronted with red brick on the ground floor, above tile-hung facing Mill Road and faced with stone rubble facing Castle Street. Hipped tiled roof. Modern casement windows including one bay window on the first floor. Two storeys. Five windows. Vaulted cellar of about 1300 below the building.

This house consists of two portions. The east portion is probably a 17th Century or earlier timber-framed building, refaced in the 18th Century, the west portion a 18th Century addition. Both are now faced with red brick on ground floor and tile-hung above. Tiled roof. Casement windows. Two storeys. Five windows. The west portion has an eaves cornice of brick cogging and one hipped dormer. Vaulted cellar of about 1300 below the building.

18th Century. Two storeys. Two windows. Ground floor stone rubble, above tile-hung. Hipped tiled roof. Sash windows on first floor with glazing bars intact. One casement window on ground floor and one small shop window (not now used as such) with glazing bars intact. Doorway with flat hood over supported on brackets. Vaulted cellar of about 1300 beneath the house.

Early 19th century. Two storeys. One window. Ground floor stuccoed, above weather-boarded. Hipped tiled roof. Shop window, not now used as such, on ground floor. Casement windows above.
